My proposed reading list for looking at Iberian Connections within the frame of “Contemporary Pasts”, is twofold. Part I revisits a number of texts that reflect on figurations of Africa and the African subjectivity in Spain from an ethno-politically situated perspective. Part II traces the trajectory of my own engagement with a number of Iberian connections in Africa, concretized in six specific localities or Iberian exteriorities: Western Sahara, Ceuta, Melilla, Elobey, Corisco and Fernando Poo; it simultaneously and tentatively proposes two (non-binding and non-exclusionary) paradigms for a more encompassing appraisal of Spain’s contemporary pasts: the Global Hispanophone and the centrality of Africa in Iberian Atlantic Studies.
